Christmas in Walnut Creek

by Sasha Slavnovskaya

Walnut Creek is a tiny city compared to its neighbor, San Francisco. It might not be as extreme, but its coziness is welcoming to those who want to have a calm Christmas. It is enough to go for a drive through one of its rich neighborhoods with its decorated houses to feel the Christmas spirit.

Besides this, Walnut Creek offers a big ice skating rink so Californians can experience winter in its actual snowy form. For 15 dollars, you can gain entrance to the rink with ice skates included. “Walnut Creek on Ice” also provides guides for beginners and inexperienced small children.

The Century 14 Walnut Creek Downtown is a big movie theater with just as big of a selection of movies. In December, the movie theater shows Christmas-themed movies such as the The Grinch and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The new Grinch is a live-action version of the beloved Dr. Seuss tale with the Grinch attempting to ruin Christmas. The movie is very entertaining and will be loved by people of all ages. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a recreation of The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In fact, the theatre annually live streams Nutcracker ballet performance all the way from Moscow.

Christmas is not Christmas without a tree. In winter, Walnut Creek opens up its Christmas Tree Farms. In those farms, you can find any kind of tree: big or small, wide or tall. Having a real tree in your home is a necessity to make your home smell like a forest. An average tree costs $60-$150. If you cannot afford one or do not want to contribute to the mass chopping of trees, buy a fake one! They look very much like the real trees and are much cheaper around $30-$70. To make your fake Christmas tree look real, substitute the smell of real pine with a candle.

Another surprising way to experience Christmas is going to Target. It is especially decorated during Christmas time and just walking through the isles filled with winter decorations could bring joy. The Christmas decor is reasonably priced and if you like something in particular, you can take it home.
