Girls Basketball Is Looking Bright

by Cam Lippincott

As winter sports begin, we enter the new season of girls basketball. Last year the girl’s basketball team went 6-20 for the season and 2-8 for league. Last season wasn’t the best, being that there were a lot of freshmen and sophomores on the team. “Our team played well last year even though our record doesn’t reflect that. We played better competition which can only make you a better player and a stronger team” said Junior Rose Morse. Last season the Knights also beat Campolindo High School for the first time in 15 years. Last year was also the first year coaching the team for head coach Marvin De Los Santos. De La Santos is the 1st head coach to stay after the team had a four-year streak of having a new head coach each year. De Los Santos comes from Miramonte High School, one of the best girls basketball programs in all of California. This season is sure to be an improvement for the team. They have two returning seniors, two returning juniors and two returning sophomores. One of the key returning players is Junior Rose Morse. Last season Morse averaged 19.6 points per game leading the team. Morse was also awarded first team all-league last season. “It was always a goal of mine to make 1st league as a sophomore and it was nice to have my teammates support,” said Morse. Morse was not the only person on the team to be recognized, sophomore Isabela De La Cruz was given an honorable mention by the DAL as well.

This season the Knights are going to be in the same league as last year, the DAL Foothill League. The league includes very good teams such as Clayton Valley Charter and Acalanes High School. Playing in the better division is only going to make the team better. The team’s first game is at Arroyo High School on November 30th. Any teams in any sport’s first game is extremely important. A win in the first game is an extreme confidence booster. Their first home game will be against American High School on December 2nd. Their first league game will be at Alhambra High School on January 7th. The Knight’s goal is to make the NCS playoffs after missing them last year. The team made the playoffs two seasons ago and lost to Cardinal Newman High School in the first round.

This year’s team is sure to have much success this season, especially with the returning starters from last season. The Las Lomas community wishes the team the best of luck and hopes the team reaches all of their goals.
