2010s Trends

by Alyssa Clouston

With every year came a new influential challenge or craze, like the ALS ice bucket challenge, rainbow looms, fidget spinners, slime, and social media.

In 2014, what started off as a campaign to promote awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis quickly caught the internet’s attention and became a nationwide challenge. People would film these videos, put them online, and donate to the organization. In each video, the partaker would nominate their friends and family to participate and make a video of their own states that “Jeanette Senerchia, whose husband was diagnosed with ALS 11 years ago, first took the Ice Bucket Challenge in July, after being nominated by her cousin. She had no idea what would happen next.

The creative art of Rainbow Looms became the craze of the year. Kids and teenagers alike would purchase the rainbow loom maker and bands to create a unique bracelet. The possibilities for each bracelet was endless, with designs like the fishtail, the triple fishtail, or a simple chain. The jewelry became popular when friends would make and trade them with one another.

Although fidget spinners were originally made to help kids with attention deficits focus, in 2017 nearly every kid across the country had heard of or used one. Many teenagers even collected the toys. Children all over began stacking up on them as soon as they hit the creative market. Unfortunately, many schools were forced to ban them when the obsession got out of hand and started to disrupt the learning environment.

One of the most recent trends of the decade that started as a small fad quickly grew into one of the most popular and memorable trends of the decade: Slime. It didn’t take long for the trend to expand from something children made at home with friends to a Youtube mania of accounts. Many Youtubers gained attention for posting tutorials of not only how to make slime, but it’s many uses, such as a way to relieve stress and create pleasing sounds for ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) videos. Like Rainbow Looms, the variety of slime that kids are able to make was unmatched, with designs including glitter slime, magnetic slime, and many others.

Social media has expanded a lot throughout the years. Many new platforms have been created such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Tiktok. Snapchat started off as a small platform in 2011. Instagram also dropped in 2011 and immediately got popular. Lastly Tik Tok has become the newest internet sensation. The app, originally called, gave kids a platform to perform, by lip syncing to music. The app turned into Tik Tok, where people would post skits, dancing videos, and lip syncing.
