Choosing the right classes is a pivotal decision for students at Las Lomas High School, as it sets the foundation for their academic journey and future career paths. The range of courses available caters to various interests, spanning subjects like history, English, mathematics, computer science and more. Making informed choices during high school not only shapes a student’s academic experience but also plays a crucial role in shaping their professional future and major choices.

One of the key considerations when selecting classes is the opportunity to explore diverse subjects. For students intrigued by the past, history courses provide a rich understanding of civilizations, cultures and historical events. Here at Las Lomas, there are a variety of advanced history courses that students can take. As a sophomore, AP Human Geography is offered which takes students through an anthropological history of the world. Furthermore, juniors have the opportunity to take AP US History and as a senior, potentially take AP US Government. As Las Lomas offers a plethora of advanced courses in the history department, each student should think carefully about their interests and course load.

For those with a passion for healthcare, taking classes in the medical field can lay the groundwork for future studies in medicine, nursing, or other health-related jobs. Las Lomas High School not only offers AP Biology, but additionally offers courses such as Principles of Biomedical Science, Sports Medicine, and Physiology. These courses provide students with a rich understanding of what it looks like to be in the medical field, while also letting students try it out and see if they would actually pursue a career in medicine. It is very fortunate that our high school offers these courses and gives students the unique opportunity to learn about the medical field.

Furthermore, AP classes as a whole are important for high schoolers for several reasons. Firstly, taking AP classes allows students to challenge themselves academically and experience a more rigorous curriculum. These classes provide a college-like atmosphere which can help students develop the skills necessary for going to university. Additionally, AP classes demonstrate to colleges and universities that students are willing to take on challenging coursework and are motivated to excel as a high schooler. Las Lomas’s course catalog gives students the opportunity to succeed in the professional world and truly prepares them for the college work which is just a few years away. And AP classes prepare students for the AP tests in May, for which a passing grade (a 4 or 5) may count for college credit (depending on the college).
